PHOTOGRAPHING LIFE AS IT IS

My passion and love of photography began when I was a young child. Sitting around the kitchen table with my Grandma and Great Aunts looking through old albums of cracked black and white images again and again. I think those afternoons taught me the value of a photograph and made me nostalgic for a time before my own. Those afternoons made me realize how quickly life passes and gave me a great appreciation and love for the power of photography.

I wanted to work as a photographer since my days in high school, but it wasn't until a few months after the birth of my youngest child that I decided to make the leap to follow my dreams. Beyond wanting to follow them for myself, I wanted to show my children that it's never too late to follow their hearts or try something new.

My main objective is to capture part of your authentic now. The images and films I create are an endeavour to help you hold on to the feelings of this moment in time. I specialize in documentary and lifestyle images depending on the type of session you want.

I see photography as a form of storytelling. Below you can read about the styles of photography I offer, to see which is the best fit for you and your goals: Documentary and Lifestyle.

STORY TELLING PHOTOGRAPHIC STYLES I USE

FAMILY PHOTOJOURNALIST STYLE/DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY:

Aims to tell the story of your life as it unfolds.

There is no posing, no props, no pre-ordained ideas as to what will happen, just real life. I bring my camera and I document.

Whether it be a random Tuesday afternoon at home or the amazing day your baby is being born. My goal is to chronicle the moments of your life to the best of my ability using my technical and artistic skill and vision. An authentic, sometimes joyful, sometimes sad, but always genuine way to tell your story, whatever that story may be.

The images created in documentary sessions are ones that you will cherish. This style of photography has my heart.

Preparing is easy. Just be you. You may want to tidy up before I come over, but you don't have to. No need to get dressed up, no need to be on your best behaviour. It's a time for you and your family to be yourselves and have someone there to see all the moments that you miss, because you're living in them. You can arrange to bake cookies, paint a picture or just do what you do.

Before your session we will talk about what it is about this time of life that is important for you and anything and any little things you'd like me to keep my eye out for during our time together.

Two dogs, a toddler and a grandmother all sit looking out a winter on a snowy day.

LIFESTYLE photography:

Is somewhat orchestrated vs. 100% naturally unfolding. Not studio level orchestration, but there will be some direction and more camera aware shots.

To improve shots I may move you into better light, remove distractions, ask people to engage with one another, and help you to look your best.

I aim to create a relaxed atmosphere so that I can do as little directing as possible and so that the images I capture of you are sincere and true to your story.

These sessions happen in and around the Ottawa area, either in and around your home, or on location. Ottawa is home to a number of beautiful outdoor locations, as well as some pretty great ice cream shops, markets and coffee shops.

You and I can discuss what you'd like to capture about your family and then work together to find the best way to make that happen.
